Security Systems: Do They Really Work?
Due to booming popularity of their usage, many people wonder if modern security systems are really effective or merely a fad. Its easy to explain how security and alarm systems work in terms of the functioning and processing of their hardware and software components, but the big question is: Do they really work?
The most accurate answer would be: Yes, but it depends.
The answer could be different for many users in different circumstances. To explore this answer further, lets look into the basic works: the function of each security component and how theyre put into use.
Controlling components
The controlling components are the devices used to arm and disarm the other security system components. These devices include computers and mobile devices like tablets and smart phones that can display the control panel where users access the controls for arming and disarming individual components. The control panel is also whats used to communicate with other people, or members who have access to the control panel to alert them about any breach or intrusion, and to communicate with a security monitoring company, if they are actively using their services.
Control panels require that pass codes be entered before any component can be armed or disarmed. Literally, the control panel is the key to the entire security systems network. To ensure the security of the protected premises, the devices used to access the control panel should be kept secure, and people who have access to them should be limited.
Handheld remote controls are also controlling components that can be used to arm and disarm individual components. For security systems that dont have a central control panel, remote controls are the only controlling components that can be used for arming and disarming each device. However, compared to systems that use a control panel, handheld remote controls can be used by anyone and are easy to lose and misuse, so the security of the protect premises cant be optimally guaranteed.
Sensory and surveillance components
These components include devices such as motion sensors, window sensors, door sensors, and surveillance or CCTV cameras that detect or capture evidences of any breach or intrusion. These devices, when armed, will send out a signal to the control panel and the alarm components to trigger the alarm system once a breach is detected.
Alarm components
Alarm components include sirens or bells that produce high-decibel ringing sounds when a breach is detected to alert the people who monitor the protected premises. The loud alarm sounds alert the people inside the premises that a breach occurred, and also warn the intruders that they have been detected and someone is on their way to check the premises.
The sensory, surveillance and alarm components work hand-in-hand. Alarm components will not work without the use of sensory and surveillance components. Likewise, sensory and surveillance components are ineffective without the alarm components.
Accessory components
Accessory components, such as stickers and signage that inform people that the place is protected by security systems, are useful in deterring potential intruders before they even attempt to perform any break-ins. Though the whole security system can work adequately without these components, theyre still effective as preventive measures.
Conclusion:
Each security component has a part to play in the whole security system. The components should work together to ensure the security of the protected premises. So long as the security system is complete and functional, it will remain effective in minimizing the likelihood of potential intrusions.
So, do security systems really work? Yes. But then again, it depends on whether the components are working properly together.
